*New Service – Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT)
The Minoayawin Mobile Outreach Program (MMOP), operated by Keewatinohk Inniniw Minoayawin Inc. (KIM), is
now accepting referrals for opioid agonist therapy (OAT) in Thompson, Manitoba.
Opioid agonist therapy (OAT) is recognized as an effective treatment for adults living with opioid use disorder (OUD). OAT is most effective when offered alongside additional supports, such as counselling, peer support, and other services that strengthen overall wellness.
At KIM, we approach care through a harm reduction perspective. This means meeting people where they are, respecting their choices, and working alongside individuals, families, and communities as they pursue health and wellness in their own way. Care is provided without shame or judgment.
Not all substance uses leads to harm. However, the current reality of a toxic and unregulated drug supply has created a serious risk for anyone who uses unregulated opioids. Toxic drug poisoning can affect people across many circumstances. Those living with opioid use disorder and relying on the unregulated drug supply face the greatest risk of serious harm, including death.
OAT is a safe and evidence-based treatment that supports people living with opioid use disorder. The medications used in OAT provide a stable level of opioids that reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Research shows that OAT lowers the risk of overdose and helps reduce harms associated with opioid use disorder.
When supporting First Nations individuals who use substances, care must be grounded in a strengths-based, culturally safe, and trauma-informed approach. This approach recognizes the impacts of colonialism, intergenerational trauma, and systemic barriers, while also recognizing the strengths that exist within First Nations individuals, families, and communities.
